Why This Matters

Critical Need

Community Healthcare Access

West Suburban Hospital served as the primary healthcare provider for hundreds of thousands of Oak Park and west suburban residents. Its closure left a critical gap in the region's healthcare safety net.

Emergency Care Availability

Every minute counts in a medical emergency. The closure of West Suburban has increased emergency response times and placed dangerous strain on remaining area hospitals.

Senior & Vulnerable Populations

Elderly residents and those with chronic conditions face the greatest risk from reduced healthcare access and longer travel distances.

Local Jobs & Economic Impact

Over 700 healthcare workers lost their jobs. The ripple effect on local businesses, suppliers, and the broader Oak Park economy has been devastating.

Healthcare Equity

Safety-net hospitals serve communities that cannot afford to lose them. Closure disproportionately harms low-income and uninsured patients.

Community Stability

A hospital is more than a building — it is the backbone of community infrastructure. Its absence destabilizes neighborhoods, reduces property values, and erodes community confidence.

The Human Impact

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a story. These are the voices of our community — the reason we fight.

Margaret T.
Patient Story
West Suburban was where I had my hip replaced, where my husband received cancer treatment, where my grandchildren were born. When it closed, I felt like part of our community had been torn away.

Denise R., RN
Healthcare Worker
I gave 18 years of my career to West Suburban. We didn't just treat patients — we knew them. We were their neighbors. The day it closed was one of the hardest days of my professional life.

James K.
Community Voice
I run a small business two blocks from the hospital. When it closed, foot traffic dropped, employees left the area, and the whole neighborhood felt the loss. We need it back.

Who We Are

About the Coalition

The Coalition to Save West Suburban Hospital was born from the grassroots organizing of Oak Park residents, healthcare workers, faith leaders, and community advocates who refused to accept the loss of their community's most essential institution.

We are neighbors, patients, nurses, doctors, teachers, and business owners united by a single conviction: healthcare is not a privilege — it is essential infrastructure.

Our coalition works on two parallel tracks: advocating for the reopening of West Suburban Hospital and championing legislative reforms that will protect communities across Illinois from sudden, devastating hospital closures.
